Vale Montanha Limitada is a Portuguese company specialising in the manufacture of insert type wood burning fires. The fires are sold in Portugal and Europe under the brand name fogo montanha.
The company was founded in 1981 by an Englishman who had come to retire in Portugal.
He was initially led to believe that the Algarve was a warm sunny place all year round so he bought a spacious villa, only to find it to be surprisingly cold and damp in the winter. Promptly buying a well-known make of wood fire he found it to be much less efficient than advertised so out came the drawing board and welding torch and the first fire was made. The villa was called "Vale de Montanha" (mountain valley in Portuguese) so it seemed logical to call the stove fogo montanha (fire mountain in Portuguese).
The first fires were made in the garage of the villa. Sales have increased steadily ever since and the company now works from a modern factory on the outskirts of Portimão.
Vale Montanha Lda. continues to be a family owned company manufacturing approximately 3500 wood fires per year, forty per cent for export.
